The Gilded Age in London with Two Temple Place.

The Gilded Age in London  Tickets £48

Pick up at 8.30 from the Hart. Return around 6

After the American Civil War, the US economy grew at lightning speed. The so-called robber baron families built vast fortunes from monopolies in steel (Carnegies), oil (Rockefellers), railways (Vanderbilts) and real estate (Astors). Mark Twain called these unprecedented times The Gilded Age.

We meet our Blue Badge guide and have coffee (included) and then begin exploring a story-rich enclave of The Gilded Age running between Pall Mall and St James’s Park. This is a tale of money, mansions and scandal. On the cusp of Victorian and Edwardian London American Dollar Princesses, who had everything they wanted, except invites to the nicest parties, crossed the Atlantic husband hunting for a cash strapped Duke or Earl. It was a game of keeping up with the Astors.

Mini coach tour round Mayfair and then time for Lunch (not included ) around St James’s, just off Piccadilly

In the afternoon we go to Two Temple Place.  Overlooking the Thames a hidden architectural gem built for William Waldorf Astor - the richest man in the world. Opulent interiors and each year a special exhibition: for 2022 it's called Body Vessel Clay. 70 years of ceramics, celebrating the medium in unusual ways

Making Art in Siena via Zoom

1030-1130
We enjoy exclusive access to the workshop of a well-known artist living in Siena, just a few steps away from the famous Cathedral and Museo dell’Opera. Participate in a live interview and workshop as we explore the techniques which medieval and Renaissance artists would have used, from preparing a panel to drawing, gilding and tooling. Have you ever wondered what materials and pigments painters such as Duccio and Piero della Francesca would have used? How long would it have taken to complete a painting? How did they use gold leaf? All these questions and many more will be answered in this live, step-by-step demonstration in which we will observe the techniques which the great Italian painters employed.

Siân recently ran this workshop for an online course which she taught at the National Gallery and it was very warmly received by both the gallery and participants: “The session was just fascinating!
